Training that does not address the participants' real workstations is forgotten the same day. We all know the generic presentation that goes from plant to plant with only the name changed on the opening slide, and the attendance form that is signed at the end and filed away in a binder. That is why every training we deliver is built from the specific organization's own operations, using its materials, its workstations, and the incidents that actually happened there.
Common topics include environmental awareness and the requirements that apply to the facility, working with hazardous materials and spill response, waste separation and disposal procedures, and induction briefings for contractors and new employees. We tailor each one to its audience: a manager needs to understand their exposure and personal responsibility, and a line worker needs to know what to do when something spills next to them.
We prefer short, frequent sessions over a single long seminar once a year. One hour focused on a single topic, which lets participants try things for themselves, is worth more than five consecutive hours of slides. When the topic allows, we go out to the workstations themselves and deliver the training in front of the actual equipment rather than in a conference room.
Trainings are documented in a way that stands up to audit, including topic, duration, attendee list, and materials covered, and are delivered in a language the employees genuinely understand. We also reach night shifts and contractor workers, who are usually the group that receives the least training while facing the highest exposure.
At the end of each cycle, we check what was absorbed. Not through a formal test, but through a short conversation in the field a few weeks after the training, which immediately shows whether the message got through or stayed in the presentation. What did not get through returns in the next cycle in a different form.
